Is it Reasonable to make New Year’s Resolution?

People customarily make their New Year’s Resolution desiring to become a better person on the onset of the year. Though it is likely done over and over again, they never give up hoping for another chance to make their vow happen each year. There is a positive aspect in making a New Year’s Resolution. In most cases the person is not satisfied with his present way of life thus he will make an effort to thrive and achieve something. However, it is important for everyone to realize that as a rule, man cannot change and conform to his resolutions based only on good intentions. In Romans 7:19-20 we read,

“For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelling in me.”

Sin is the very reason why an individual is always a failure in changing himself. In a state of veiled slavery, it is the sin that resides within that reigns over the person which eventually hinders him from doing well. As stated in verse 21

“I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

It is vital for you to have will power and intense desire but the Word of God explains that it is certainly impossible for a man to change for his heart is full of wickedness and deception (Jeremiah 17:9). Nevertheless, we have an assurance that it is only God who can change an individual and create a sanctified heart, a new frame of soul and a new spirit (Ezekiel 26:36). Hence, man can only change himself through the help of God. It is by accepting Christ as your Savior. Repent, cleanse yourself and thereby return to God (Acts 2:38 ), then trust the spirit of the Lord will now dwell within you (Ezekiel 36:27).

How can a person overcome his wicked ways? He must accept a new life from God and consequently he will receive the power of the Holy Spirit that will enable him to walk in the commandments and statute of God. Thus, there is no need to make a New Year’s Resolution every year for change comes from within as a gift from God.
